Tuition

There are lectures and tutorials in all modules and the learning process is augmented by participation in case studies and group work. This allows course members to understand the theoretical concepts of management by applying them to business problems in the real world.

Structure

The Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) comprises of four taught modules.

  • Executive course members study one module per weekend; there are four weekend sessions.

Assessment

Each DMS module will be assessed by means of one written assignment (in the case of the Executive mode this assignment may relate to the course member’s place of work), and one written examination.

Progression to a Masters

Those completing the DMS programme at an appropriate level can proceed to a University of Plymouth MBA & MSc programme at GSM London

Programme Modules

Health Service Management

This module will explore the features of the health service in the public and private sector which modern management approaches can be used to improve the efficiency of performance. You will identify the ways in which health service policy can be applied to maximum benefit, and analyse the nature of organisational structures and the management of communication systems and staff morale. You will identify problem resolving policies in the management of organisational change.

Financial Analysis

This module will introduce you to the nature of the short-term and long-term capital Markets by developing your understanding of the factors underlying investment decisions and those relating to the deployment of capital within organisations. You will explore the methods and costs of raising capital and analyse methods of setting and controlling cash flow and cash budgets.

Health Service Environment

You will identify the social, political and economic factors influencing the environment of the health service to determine the ways in which public policy changes have affected the organisation and procedures in the NHS. You will analyse the changes in the relationship between health service professionals, institutions and patients and analyse the methods of monitoring quality and quantity of services and their relationship to needs assessment.

Human Resource Management

This module introduces the nature of corporate culture and change in organisations and the roles played by managers, individuals, groups and teams. It is also designed to develop an understanding of both the strategy and operational aspects of the management of human resources in organisations, and also the ways in which the quality of HRM affects all the functions of management. 

Study Skills

The Study Skills module is intended to provide the foundations for undertaking undergraduate studies. It will address potential problems by providing the development for good academic practice. It is important to make explicit the criteria and standards applied in assessing students’ work and accordingly this module aims to initiate an understanding of such requirements.

Entry requirements

Candidates will be expected to possess:

  • A recognised Bachelor's degree or equivilent qualification in any subject from a recognised UK overseas or international institution;
  • A NFQ Level 6 qualification

Candidates must also hold at least 3 years management experience.

Exceptionally, applicants may be considered on their individual merits as special cases.

English Language Requirements

If English is not your first language you will be required to demonstrate English Language proficiency at the levels below:

Cambridge English (Advanced) : Grade C or above (No less than "weak" in any skill)

Cambridge IELTS (Academic Test) : 6.0 or above (No less than 5.5 in any skill & No less than 6.0 in the Reading and Writing skills for all Law related programmes)

Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) : 55 or above (No less than 51 in any skill & No less than 56 in the Reading and Writing skills for all Law related programmes)

On receipt of your application form and enclosures the School will quickly assess your application and:
Accept you for your chosen course if you are qualified for the programme. (If you are not qualified the School may suggest an alternative programme that suits your needs and qualifications).
Forward to you an acceptance letter and statement of fees. These letters will inform you of the date that you should enrol and the duration and cost of the programme.
