Samson Dauda - BSc (Hons) Business Management
“My career was going well and my employers were impressed with my work, however I realised that I couldn’t progress any further without a degree. At GSM London I was given the opportunity to study the foundation year and the BSc (Hons) Business Management in three years. This flexibility was important to me. I had to continue working alongside my studies and I didn’t want interrupt my career for too long.
There is a range of support for students here. For example, when I started I took an academic writing course that taught me how to engage in academic debate and how to quote and reference sources. It has greatly improved my writing. There is also a well-stocked library and the classrooms are equipped with the latest technology. The tutors are interested in our progress and know the students well. Many have worked in the business sector – so through their experience we know what to expect when we go into business."
Ngoc Minh Nguyen Thi - BSc (Hons) Business Management
“Opting for BSc (Hons) Business Management at GSM London was definitely the right choice. The standard of teaching is high and the small, friendly environment means that you don’t get swallowed up in the crowd.
The lecturers have made studying for my degree really enjoyable. As well as having academic experience, many have also been managers in business and have vocational experience. They are really approachable and know most of the students by their first names. Before I started my course I had always been interested in marketing, but being taught marketing by the lecturers here really sold it to me and now I’m considering it as a career when I finish."
Dale Godfrey – BSc (Hons) Business Management
"I’ve always been business minded and when I started at GSM London, I was already running a company that imported surfboards from South Africa to Cornwall and Australia.
The BSc in Business Management taught me where I was going right with my company and where I was going wrong too. For example: I realised that I shouldn’t be holding stock myself, it’s far more productive to set up links - act as the middle person. Much of what I learned on my course has been relevant and applicable because the tutors are not just academics, they are practitioners who have industry experience too."
Jakeya Hussain – BSc (Hons) Business Management
"The teaching is more personal here than it is at other institutions. At my last university I didn’t know my tutors, but as Greenwich is a small campus I see the tutors everyday. I know who they are and where to find them if I need help. Neil Jones, who taught me economics, is very good.
My biggest achievement so far has been to successfully deliver a business presentation to a large, diverse audience. Studying for a business management degree gives me a lot of career options. It’s a broad subject that will help me secure a job in a large corporation when finish.”
Oluwaseun Onasanya - BSc (Hons) Business Management
“I have to work and support my family so the option to study flexibly was vital to me. It’s a year into my BSc (Hons) Business Management course and I’ve been able to manage all of those responsibilities, study and get good grades.
GSM London is a very conducive learning environment. The library has all the books that I need for my course and the tutors are very experienced - both academically and in business. As an adult learner I really appreciate this, as they are able to relate to students of all ages and backgrounds. In addition, the tutors acknowledge and understand the experience we bring to the course too. The lectures and tutorials are small which means there are a lot of opportunities for one-to-one learning. I’ve particularly enjoyed business law, which is an area that interests me.
There is also the opportunity to attend open lectures on contemporary themes and issues. I recently attended Dr Michael Reynolds’s international law lectures, which were thought provoking and interactive. We discussed the extent to which international law was a factor in Britain’s entry into the Great War. It was great to have the opportunity to examine this in so much depth."
Sonia Taher – BSc (Hons) Human Resource Management with Information Systems
"Once I started my course, I realised that HR was the ideal career for me as I am particularly interested in employment law and human resource theory. The HR department is definitely where I’d like to be in five to ten years time as I enjoy working with people.
I’d definitely recommend GSM London to my friends and family – for a number of reasons. Firstly, the degrees are accredited by top ranking Plymouth University. Secondly, for the flexible study options that aren’t offered at many universities and thirdly, of course, for the great support that the Careers Department offers to students!”
Hilary Kemp - BSc (Hons) Events Management
"I chose the BSc (Hons) Events Management degree as I had organised a lot of corporate functions in my previous role as a PA and really enjoyed it. The course has helped me to develop a deeper understanding of working with organisations and co-ordinating events. When I finish I’d like to start my own company or join a large organisation.
GSM London is a very supportive environment to study in as it’s a small institution. That’s enabled me to build good relationships with both my tutors and the other students on my course. My biggest achievement so far is averaging a distinction. I’ve worked hard to gain good grades and it’s given me a lot of confidence. Especially in modules like accountancy that I hadn’t done before."
Pola Kamienska – BSc (Hons) Business Management and Information Technology
“I wanted to study a degree with a vocational focus, which is why I chose Business Management with IT at GSM London. Before my course, I was working full-time as a quality controller, so starting higher education was a big decision. However, it was definitely the right choice and it has put me on a new career path.
The tutors are very experienced. Some are academics; others lecture part-time and run their own businesses. They have up-to-the-minute knowledge of the industry and know what they’re talking about. We’re taught about the latest developments, which is vital for me as when I leave, I hope to follow a career in IT.
The Greenford campus is spacious and the facilities are excellent. There are always enough computers in classrooms and I have everything that I need to study.”
Abiola Akinpelu – BSc (Hons) Management with Human Resource Management
“I decided to return to education after the birth of my child, who is now six months old. A friend who is a current student recommended GSM London to me and I am due to start my course in September. As I already have a Diploma in Business and Finance I will start at level one.
The BSc (Hons) Management with Human Resource Management appealed to me as I plan to pursue a career in Human Resources (HR). The management focus of the course will give me an opportunity to learn about every aspect of an organisation – how each department works and the HR focus will, of course, give me an in depth understanding of my chosen field."
Ekow Biney – BSc (Hons) Business Management and Information Technology
"I’m currently at level one of a BSc (Hons) Business Management and Information Technology course. The mode of study I’ve opted for includes Year 0 and the accelerated two-year degree. The entire course will take three years. I’ve definitely made the right decision. It’s hard work, but I’ve pushed myself and so far my grades have averaged a first. I’m enjoying the challenge and every time I attend a class, I learn something that I didn’t know before – which makes it worthwhile. The lecturers are friendly, helpful and happy to answer any questions."
Jacqueline Stephen - Bsc (Hons) Oil and Gas Management
"The BSc (Hons) Oil and Gas is the only course of its kind in England. The syllabus is diverse and covers both technical and commercial topics. My background is scientific, so studying the management side has been really interesting. Students also have the opportunity to join the Energy Institute – not many places offer that.
Class sizes are small at GSM London and that’s made a big difference to me. If I want to discuss an assignment or talk through my work, the tutors are always available. The one-to-one contact is really beneficial."
Bruno Quiala - Bsc (Hons) Oil and Gas Management
"Before I came to GSM London, I was learning English at college. As a French speaker I was concerned about studying in another language, however the lectures are clear and easy to follow and my written English has improved considerably. The small, friendly environment has been beneficial. The tutors are helpful and there is a lot of teamwork among the students. When we have assessments and exams, we study and revise together.
Developing a deeper understanding of petroleum and the policies that are used in different countries has been the most enjoyable part so far. There is a lot of money involved in the industry, but the environmental impact also needs to be considered – that’s why the policies are so important."
Iqbal Hafiz - Bsc (Hons) Oil and Gas Management
"GSM London offers a different student experience to other universities. The classes are smaller and there’s a lot more one-to-one contact with the tutors. It’s certainly made a difference to my studies. For example: my biggest achievement so far has been gaining a first for my second year work on international energy policy. My tutor for this, Dr. Martinez-King was very inspiring, her teaching was fantastic – she helped me to develop academically, to look at things differently and introduced me to a new way of writing. My interest in the environmental side of oil and gas is down to her. Also, the campus is also in a great location. There’s always a lot going on in Greenwich and the transport links are good.
After my course, I plan to work internationally – preferably undertaking contract work and consultancy for oil and gas companies.”
Cheryl Hall - Bsc (Hons) Oil and Gas Management
"Studying at GSM London is exhilarating; meeting students from a wide cross section of the community, creating lasting friendships. An added bonus is studying alongside my son Germaine (pictured right), we are studying BSc Oil and Gas management together. The curriculum is broad and extensive and I am sure upon completion of this degree I will be on par with graduates across the country.”
Beka Zarnadze – Executive Master of Business Administration
“The quality and delivery of the Executive MBA is outstanding. It’s accredited by Plymouth University, which means I can receive a qualification from a high-ranking institution while remaining in London where I live and work.
I was already employed at GSM London when I started and despite a busy schedule, the flexibility of the course has enabled me to both work and study. We attend a teaching weekend every three months and then complete an assignment on the subject that we’ve covered. Studying while I’m working gives me the opportunity to apply what I’ve studied to my job - as I’m studying it. That’s given me a real insight into how I can be more strategic and tactical. Sometimes I realise that I already deliver some of the concepts that I’ve later covered in textbooks!"
