Term 1
Study Skills
The Study Skills module is intended to provide the foundations for undertaking undergraduate studies. It will address potential problems by providing the development for good academic practice. It is important to make explicit the criteria and standards applied in assessing students’ work and accordingly this module aims to initiate an understanding of such requirements.
Management
This module identifies the nature and responsibilities of management and how these have evolved over the past few decades. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between strategic objectives and operational policies, and contrasts the problems of management in large and small companies and in different types of industries. The module identifies the global nature of business and addresses areas concerned with the sustainability of organisational, economic and natural resources.
Introduction to Accounting
This module demonstrates the significance and limitations of data presented in financial statements including profit and loss accounts, balance sheets, cash flow statements and liquidity measurement. The financial statements will be related to the implications for management decisions and forward planning in business organisations.
Term 2
Events Planning Process
The event planning process is the application of the management practice of project management to the creation and development of events. It involves the intricate study of devising the event concept, target audience, brand marketing, market communication, logistic planning and coordinating the technical aspects before executing the modalities of the proposed event. This module will look at the interesting and exciting challenges of working with a sizable workforce and the vital project management skills required by the industry. Managers are no longer experts in just one area but must be able to demonstrate mastery in a wide range of areas from communication, to legislation, resource management and project delivery.
Events Law and Support Services
Events managers must have an understanding of laws relevant to their industry and their ramifications. In order to make such a judgement, the event manager must remain well-informed of the general changes to legislation that could have an impact on daily operations. The aim of this module is to provide a general understanding of the legislation that could have an impact on event operations thus underlining the importance of recent changes to legislations.
Events Design
The Events Design module will illustrate to students how events organisations create and conceptualise event to maximise the audience’s experience. The process of event design is implemented in not only hallmark events such as festivals and large sporting events, but also in small events such as weddings, parties and corporate events. The students will develop skills which will focus on areas of creativity and design. They will produce hypothetical sales pitch to clients which will explain and justify their events design.
Term 3
Human Resource Management for the Events Sector
This module is designed to consider how the fundamental principles of human resource management are applicable to the events industry whilst exploring unique challenges that an events organisation would have to consider. The Module will emphasise on the management skills involved in promoting the effectiveness of human resources in events organisations, and in particular developing the motivation of staff. The Module will identify the procedures involved when governing suppliers or contractors, volunteers and core staff. The module will evaluate methods gaining the support of individuals and groups to cooperate with new policies in the face of organisational change. Causes of conflict at work and policies designed for its reduction will be appraised.
Marketing
This module identifies the nature of consumer behaviour across a range of industries, and evaluates methods of meeting consumer needs and the interrelationship between these methods. It also demonstrates the impact of marketing policies on other functional management policies in business organisations and identifies techniques of marketing planning.
Management Accounting
The purpose of this module is to identify the financial issues arising in the management of organisations. In particular, issues relating to cost structures, the availability of capital and resource allocation which are crucial to breakeven and profitability, will be examined. Additionally, processes of budgeting and financial control constitute an important part of the module.
Term 4
Events Operations Management
An understanding of venue licensing and legislative compliance is essential to venue operations in the UK. Those seeking to manage venues need to ensure their facilities are safe and fully licensed if they wish to continue within the industry. Knowledge of pertinent regulation will not be sufficient, students will need a host of specialist qualifications to effectively fulfil their roles and protect their personal and business assets in today’s litigious environment. Introducing students to techniques to implement current health and safety regulations, risk assessment and security procedures is as important as obtaining recognition from pertinent awarding bodies.
Professional Events Solutions
A professional event solution is designed to give the students practical experience in organising an event. Under GSM London’s supervision the students will conceptualise and implement an event whilst documenting their event planning process. Regular meetings with tutors will allow the students to articulate their event life cycle, giving the tutors an indication to how the event was produced.
Corporate Hospitality
This module gives an insight into one aspect of the hospitality sector. Students will examine some major events and consider the hospitality content of something seemingly unconnected to their chosen sector. Students will be able to consider the importance of corporate hospitality and the diversity of this work.
Term 5
International Events Management
Events organisations are affected by globalization like most other businesses and this present both opportunities and risks. In order to take advantage of opportunities, events originations need to develop strategies to take into account financial, organisational and cultural barriers alongside appropriate promotional and event management techniques.
Total Quality Management for the Events Sector
This module is concerned with the nature of quality in management and how it can be identified in practice. It relates to methods of ensuring quality across a range of management functions and how quality is set within the culture of management in event organisations. The module also identifies the total quality approach to the management of human resources. Event planners intend that their final outcome of an event results in a positive experience and productive outcomes, It is important that event organisers ensure total quality throughout the event planning process to deliver a successful event.
Events Financial Management
Like any business venture, event organisations must sell products or services in order to generate sufficient revenue to survive or make a sufficient profit. The purpose of this module is to identify the financial issues arising in the management within an event organisation. In particular, issues relating to cost structures, grants, sponsorship and the availability of capital and resource allocation which are crucial to breakeven and profitability, will be examined. Additionally, processes of budgeting and financial control constitute an important part of this module.
Term 6
Strategic Management
This module examines the nature of corporate strategy and the reasons for setting long term corporate objectives. It also demonstrates the interlinking between strategy, resources recruitment, the markets and the technology employed and finances available. The external factors affecting strategy and the impact on the size and structure of organisations are also considered.
Project
The management of event organisations entails drawing upon knowledge and skills across a range of management functions, thus, it is important for managers to recognise the similarities between functions as well as the specialist skills required at departmental level. This module provides the opportunity to examine in depth one or more related problems in an events organisation.
