Flexible Part Time undergraduate degrees

An applicant of our accounting courses must be at least 18 years of age and as a minimum have obtained one of the following:

• Minimum 2 ‘A’ Level passes, grades A* - E. 

• A NQF Level 3 qualification (or an equivalent International qualification)

• BTEC National Diploma or Certificate

• Bachelor Extended Pathway (Year 0)

Mature candidates (aged 21 or above) who do not meet the standard entry requirements, should show evidence of good work experience on their CVs (minimum of one year) in order to be considered for entry onto year 0.

Other qualifications as may be considered equivalent include recognised Access Courses (subject to approval by Plymouth Business School), and the International Baccalaureate. Applications from candidates who lack the normal course entry requirements are positively encouraged. In such cases, the Admissions Tutors must be satisfied that the applicant has the necessary potential, knowledge or experience and motivation to follow the course successfully. Candidates with non standard qualifications will be invited to attend an interview.

Accreditation of prior learning - partial exemptions can be obtained from the programme subject to Plymouth University Academic Regulations and dependent on the compatibility of previous study. Each case is considered on its own merit.

In addition students who hold GCSE's, Level 2 or equivalent level qualifications may qualify for direct entry onto the Bachelors degree through our year 0 option. This programme combines the Bachelors degree with a Foundation programme and allows students direct access to the degree without having to complete Access programme or A Level or equivalent studies.

Modules for each level

Semester 1 = 2 modules ( 20 + 20 credits)

Semester 2 = 2  modules  (20 + 20 credits)

Semester 3 = 1 module (10 credits) &  GSM Employability Award

Semester 4 = 2 modules (10 credits + 20 credits)

Starting dates

The part-time degree has enrolment dates in February, May/June and October each year.

Home/ EU students not already (ie currently) in receipt of SFE funding for another degree programme can apply for a maximum tuition fee loan from SFE of £4,500 per year.

•You can apply for funding even if you have already had previous funding

–Providing that you did not gain a qualification 

–As long as the total funding does not exceed 16 years 

Part-time degree undergradute students can still claim benefits that depend on household income (means-tested benefits) which include –

•Housing benefit

•Local housing allowance

•Council Tax reduction (if unemployed)

•Part-time degree students who are disabled can keep their benefits and may also get DSA

•Students currently on benefits will not experience a period without support

What is the course structure i.e. how long does it take to complete 1 module (is it 1 module at a time or 2)?

Semester 1= 2 modules (40 credits), Semester 2 = 2 modules ( 40 credits), Semester 3 = 1 module ( 20 credits) & Employability Award.

Are credits or certificates given per module or just for the final degree?

You get a certificate on completion of a level not per module.

How many hours/days per week for classes?

Current full-time students work on 3 modules per semester = 12 hours contact time with a further 18 - 23 hour minimum of study time. Part-time degree course students will only be expected to work on a maximum of 2 modules = 8 hours contact time and 12 hours of study time total. So PT 20 hours v  FT 30 -35 hours.

Will I receive Student Finance support? If so, how will it work?

Domestic students not already in receipt of SFE funding for another degree programme including students who have already had their full funding entitlement, can apply for a maximum tuition fee loan from SFE of £4,500 per year.

Will I do the same modules as someone on a full-time course in the same semester? 

Yes

What is the part-time study schedule going to be like?

You will be given the option of first or second half of the week.
