What are the key employment needs for the renewable energy sector? How is the current oil price reduction affecting the employment market in the fossil fuel industry? These are just some of the issues that will be tackled at GSM London’s Energy Futures Week (EFW), March 14th – 18th, 2016.
GSM London, one of the UK’s largest independent providers of higher education, is holding the week of events and seminars for students who want a career in the energies sector. The week will provide a lowdown on the key issues that are facing the sector and how they affect the industry’s jobs market.
The theme for EFW 2016 is renewable energy. The renewables industry in the UK could be worth £50bn by 2020 and the Government is still backing many low carbon technology schemes with subsidies.
James Stewart, Employability Consultant - Oil & Gas Management, Business Management, GSM London says “This event is essential to students who want to pursue a career in the energy sector. Now more than ever sees the energy sector in a state of flux. With oil prices continuing to fall, the planned resurgence of nuclear energy in the UK and the continuing emergence and development of the renewables sector, energy is one of the most important, demanding and exciting sectors graduates can choose as a career.”
Speakers include Emily Briggs from Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) and Sophie Bennett, Policy Manager for Employment, Skills & Training at Renewable UK, the UK’s leading not for profit renewable energy trade association. Emily Briggs will be giving an overview of the renewables sector in the UK whilst Sophie Bennett will be discussing employment potential in the wind and marine energy sectors.
Professor Iain Stewart, Director of the Sustainable Earth Institute at Plymouth University, who was once described as geology’s ‘rock star’, will also be attending EFW. The renowned academic will be narrating and answering questions on his BBC documentary, ‘Planet Oil’, at an exclusive showing.
There will also be representatives from other leading organisations and companies such as BP, Energy UK, the Energy Institute and Africa Renewables Ltd.
Environment Analsyst for Africa Renewables Ltd, Gabrielle Szary, will be delivering one of the keynote addresses on how the renewable industry is booming in West Africa and the region’s wider importance to the global energy sector.

Despite being so highly regulated, the sector is one of innovation, both in technology and in creative solutions. Many of our students have significant operational experience that, combined with their vocational degree, fits the dynamic and international focus of the sector.”
